Michigan native John Lautner began a 55 plus year architectural career helping his parents design a lake chalet. After earning an English degree, Lautner joined the first group of  Frank Lloyd Wrights Taliesen Fellows, supervising two of the architects projects before opening his own L.A. office.

Lautner explored the relationships between man, space, and nature in his prolific oeuvre of designs which ranged from residences to innovative restaurants. Lautners homes have been featured in films including and The L.A. AIA Chapter awarded the architect a Gold Medal Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993. At the time of Lautners 1994 death, the 83 year old architect was still drafting projects.

The Elrod House (1968) at top, and below is perhaps Lautners most iconic home. Featured in the 1971 James Bond film , The Elrod House was designed to protect the Palm Springs home from the blazing desert sun. Currently listed at $13.89 M, the Space Age design features a sectioned domed roof with multiple skylights designed to bring in indirect light.  Lautner decided to engage massive rocks revealed during grading in the homes interior.

The 8901 square foot home features 5 bedrooms and 5 1/2 baths, set on 6.5 acres.

The Schaffer Residence (1949) which was featured in Tom Fords 2009 film engages the surrounding oak forest. The two bedroom/1 1/2 bath features a wall of glass doors opening to the verdant setting at the base of Southern Californias Verdugo Mountains. The 1,698 square foot home is offered for $1.495 M.

The Rawlins House (1979)  is considered the most urban of Lautners designs. The Balboa Island modern engages the oceanview lot with walls of glass and skylights throughout. The architects original copper roof and balcony, Douglas fir ceilings, and lack of interior walls lend the home a truly unique artistic quality.

The Rawlins House, listed at $4.695 M, features 3 beds and 2.5 baths.
