Downtown Winnipeg is hot in the summer!
.
Beautiful summer days are a time for relaxing, having fun, enjoying the sun and going out with friends. And one of the best places to do all of this is right in the heart of your own city! Visit downtown Winnipeg for an afternoon or evening in the summer and you’ll be astounded at the many things there are to do. In fact, you might want to take a few days off work here and there to properly enjoy all of it.
The first big event of the downtown Winnipeg summer is Jazz Fest. Free concerts are put on, featuring (what else?) jazzy music. Jazz for lunch is a nice way to take a break from work, stroll into downtown Winnipeg and listen to musicians play with passion. Jazz-lovers, this music series is for you.
Then, in the days leading up to Folk Fest (which usually takes place at the beginning of July), a number of musicians play in the Exchange District, gearing up for the big weekend of camping at Bird’s Hill Park. Always well-attended, music ranges from folk to indie. Listen to favourite musicians play and attend performances by newer artists as well to discover the diversity of music that there is to enjoy.
Fringe Fest is by far one of the biggest highlights of a downtown Winnipeg summer. Hit up Old Market Square for delicious food from local vendors (including the Mondragon), sit in the beer tents for a cold drink or watch the free shows at the outdoor stage from a comfortable grassy seat. The Fringe goes on for a couple of weeks in mid-July and has a number of venues in the downtown area. You can see some amazing performances for a very reasonable price – and one of the best parts is being able to talk with the performers as they wander throughout downtown Winnipeg between their own shows.
Visiting the various venues during the Fringe is also a good way to get acquainted with areas of downtown Winnipeg that you previously were unaware of. If you’d never been to the MTC Warehouse theatre before seeing a Fringe play there, perhaps you’ll start looking into more shows at that venue once theatre season picks up again in autumn. And don’t miss out on the art galleries and studios that stand-in as smaller venues – they’re perfect not only for an intimate performance but also for you to re-visit after the Fringe is over and it’s once again an art gallery.
Enjoy the Summer Concert Series as things start to wind down in August. It’s located at the CanWest building’s outdoor stage on Portage Avenue. And throughout the summer, you’ll find that small boutiques and used bookstores have their doors wide open, inviting you to take a peek at the treasures they hold. The new Pixels 2.1 is definitely a place you don’t want to miss, showcasing stunning photography from local Manitobans.
The only question to ask yourself is: how are you going to plan your schedule around all of this great entertainment? Enjoy your summer in the heart of the city!
